Salt del Molí Fondo

This waterfall is located in the Garrotxa National Park, close to the ruins of an old paper factory that employed most of the Sant Joan les Fonts village. As beautiful as it is, the waterfall served a specific purpose: to generate electricity for the factory.⁣

The entire area was created by lava flows coming from the nearby volcanoes and the specific sharp rock formations can be seen around the waterfall. From here on begins a known hiking trail in the region, the route of a petrified lava river.⁣

Actually the waterfall stands between three lava flows. The first one is where the waterfall is located and dates all the way back to 700.000 years, the second one is at the base of the waterfall and it is approximately 150.000 years old. The third one stands on the other side of the waterfall and comes from 130.000 years ago.⁣

Other attractions can be found in the area: a medieval bridge, an old monastery built with the surrounding volcanic stone, the restored building of an old paper dryer and Juvinyà castle, the residence of a dynasty of medieval knights, who in addition of being knights, were also acting as tax collectors in the area.⁣
