The Fishing Houses of Lake Banyoles
The town of Banyoles has its own identity that revolves around the karstic lake which was formed in the region 250.000 years ago… It is an important touristic attraction, offering various water activities as well as many options for the nature lovers.
A pleasant promenade that surrounds the lake meets the visitors with shady willows, water lilies and the in-between pesqueres – the emblematic fishing houses. There are 20 of them on the lake, each with its own name. For instance, Marimon is the name of the one in the image. It was built in 1887 on top of an earlier construction from 1874.
These peculiar buildings were initially used to store fishing equipment, then their size was increased to allow private boats to be docked or even for accommodation purposes to serve the rising Banyoles’s bourgeoisie. However their construction and alteration has been prohibited in 1931. Today the only accessible one is the tourist office owned by the City Council. It is called D’en Lero and it was built in 1886.
