Cap Sa Sal – The Five Star Hotel from the Francoist Dictatorship
Cap Sa Sal was a five-star luxury hotel opened in the 60s when the development boom was gaining momentum. It had enormous dimensions with 230 rooms and suites, five restaurants, three bars and a private jetty for the guests arriving by sea. It was decorated in the slightest detail by the best artists of the moment – from interiors to its gardens – and it became the symbol of pride, hope and distinction for its neighboring community south of Begur.
What today is merely an apartment complex was a tourist symbol of Costa Brava in the midst of the Francoist regime, adding an atmosphere and a clientele equal to the one of Cote d’Azur and the Italian Riviera.
The luxury hotel was the vision of Andreu family who owned the Tibidabo mountain. This family made a fortune in the 1900s with its pharmaceutical laboratories but nevertheless a family that contributed to the city of Barcelona with grandiose projects, leaving behind a rich inheritance: the Metropolitan hotel known today as La Rotonda, the urbanization of Tibidabo Avenue (La Avenida del Tibidabo), the construction of Tibidabo’s tram line, funicular and many more.
